Music Connection Reviews Magnolia Memoir Album
“…MM music is like a speakeasy where Billie Holiday whispers in Tom Waits’ ear…”
September 2009 – Jonathan Widran
Fashioning a vibe that blends traditional cool with a vibrant contemporary flow, this artsy yet accessible jazz ensemble (fronted by the grace of Mela Lee’s heart-tugging vocals) creates jazz for a new generation indeed. Flashes of youthful pop and progressive soul – experimental in spots – MM music is like a speakeasy where Billie Holiday whispers in Tom Waits’ ear. There’s heartbreak and optimism, bluesy trio stuff balanced by “chill jazz” perfectly complemented by high octane brass and funky blues.
Top Cuts: “Not with Me Now”, “Unexpected Bliss”, “Broken Cup”
